Flying Singapore Airlines Suites or First Class is widely considered one of the pinnacle experiences in commercial aviation. While much of the spotlight naturally shines on the airborne luxury—such as the double beds on the Airbus A380—the ground experience sets the tone for the entire journey.
Before boarding flight SQ232 from Sydney (SYD) to Singapore (SIN) in the iconic A380 Suite in October 2026, I spent several hours experiencing Singapore Airlines’ dedicated ground services at Sydney Kingsford Smith Airport Terminal 1, including their exclusive check-in lounge and the renowned SilverKris First Class Lounge. Here is a detailed breakdown of the ground experience and an unexpected baggage interline success story.
1. Dedicated First Class Check-in Area at Sydney Terminal 1
Upon arriving at Sydney Kingsford Smith Airport (Terminal 1), passengers flying in Singapore Airlines Suites and First Class are guided to an exclusive, semi-private check-in area rather than standard queue lines.
Rather than a fully enclosed room, the space is stylishly partitioned from the busy terminal concourse by high, curved glass-block walls accented with ambient under-lighting. Inside, circular carpets and comfortable terracotta-toned armchairs offer a relaxed seating zone. Just beyond this waiting alcove sits a dedicated baggage drop area and check-in desk with its own conveyor belt.
Instead of waiting on your feet, you can simply sit down while a dedicated ground agent collects your passport, prints your credentials, and handles your luggage directly on your behalf.
Exceptional Baggage Interlining Across Separate Alliances
My itinerary with Singapore Airlines was booked from Sydney (SYD) to Singapore (SIN) and onwards to Hong Kong (HKG). However, I held a separate, independently booked ticket with Korean Air from Hong Kong (HKG) to Seoul Incheon (ICN) departing later.
Normally, through-checking luggage across separate tickets—especially between different airline alliances (Singapore Airlines is Star Alliance, while Korean Air is SkyTeam)—can be strictly denied or technically complex. I inquired whether it would be possible to send my bags all the way through to Seoul (ICN).
The ground agent handled the request with outstanding professionalism. After verifying my separate Korean Air booking details, he successfully through-checked my luggage directly to ICN and even printed my physical Korean Air boarding pass on the spot. This eliminated the need to collect bags and clear Hong Kong immigration during my transit, saving considerable time and hassle.
2. Priority Security & Lounge Access
After check-in was completed, the agent directed me toward the First Class Priority Entry lane for immigration and security screening.
Thanks to the dedicated priority lane, clearing outbound customs and security took under five minutes. From there, it was a short walk to the Singapore Airlines SilverKris Lounge, situated on the upper mezzanine level of Terminal 1.
3. Inside the SilverKris First Class Lounge
The Sydney SilverKris Lounge is bifurcated into two distinct sections: the Business Class section and the intimate First Class section. Upon presenting my Suites boarding pass, I was welcomed into the First Class area.
The atmosphere in the First Class section is remarkably quiet, refined, and private compared to the main terminal concourse. Plush seating, personal productivity spaces, and warm lighting create a calm, residential vibe. While windows offer an exterior tarmac view, the real highlight of the space remains its quiet ambiance and low passenger density, providing a peaceful pre-flight retreat.
4. Dining & Beverage: A La Carte Delights & Australian Wines
Dining is where the Sydney SilverKris First Class Lounge shines. While there is a curated buffet counter with hot items, guests are presented with an a la carte dining menu made fresh to order.
The Culinary Highlights
I ordered several signature dishes from the a la carte menu, complemented by a few selections from the buffet:
- Singapore Laksa: Featured under the lounge’s All-Time Favourites, this signature dish delivers a rich, aromatic broth packed with authentic spices, tender prawns, fish cakes, and rice noodles.
- Duck Pancakes: Another highlight from the All-Time Favourites section, offering tender roasted duck rolled with savory hoisin sauce, crisp cucumber, and fresh shallots—an outstanding savory starter.
- Buffet Selection & Dim Sum: Alongside the a la carte offerings, the self-serve island features fresh salads, smoked salmon, artisanal cheeses, and assorted petite desserts, as well as a hot station with steamed dumplings and savory hot meats.
Wine Selection
Being in Australia, the lounge offered an impressive selection of local wines alongside international options. I sampled both a crisp glass of Grosset Polish Hill Riesling and Henschke Bursaria Pinot Noir; while both were excellent, the vibrant acidity of the Riesling paired even better with the savory dishes.
5. Shower Facilities & Freshening Up
Before embarking on the flight to Singapore, I visited the shower facilities inside the lounge.
Unlike the dedicated, private shower suites typically found in international First Class lounges, the setup here combines a standard restroom and a shower partitioned only by a curtain. While the space was clean, well-stocked with fresh towels, and functional enough for a quick rinse before boarding, the overall utilitarian layout felt surprisingly basic for a flagship First Class lounge.
6. Boarding: Proceeding to the Gate for SQ232
Once boarding was called, I made the short five-minute walk from the lounge to the Gate. Suites passengers enjoyed dedicated priority boarding, stepping directly onto the upper deck jet bridge of the Airbus A380 without waiting in line.
Verdict: Sydney Ground Experience
- Pros:
- Dedicated sit-down check-in area that eliminates all queuing.
- Exceptional ground agent flexibility (interlining baggage and printing boarding passes across separate alliances).
- High-quality a la carte dining and premium wine selection (the Laksa and Duck Pancakes are definite highlights).
- Quiet, residential seating ambience with excellent personal privacy.
- Cons:
- Utilitarian shower setup that feels basic for a First Class facility.
- Obscured tarmac and runway views due to airport exterior structures.
For anyone departing Sydney in Singapore Airlines Suites or First Class, arriving roughly 2.5 to 3 hours prior to departure is well worth it to fully enjoy the peaceful sit-down check-in and fresh a la carte dining.
